The air in the communal hall was thick with a reverence for stillness. It always was. The Elders, robed in the muted greys that mirrored the perpetual twilight outside, sat on their raised dais, their faces impassive masks carved from ancient stone. They spoke in hushed tones, their words measured and deliberate, each syllable polished to a dull gleam. Elara sat on the polished floor, her knees drawn to her chest, her gaze fixed on the intricate patterns woven into the rug. Beside her, nestled against her side, lay the fragile form of the Loved One, their breathing shallow and uneven. A fever, the healers called it. A simple ailment, they assured everyone, that would pass with time and rest. But Elara felt it in her bones, a chilling dissonance that had nothing to do with earthly sickness.

The Elders’ pronouncements echoed through the hall, a droning incantation of reassurance. “The body is a vessel,” one intoned, their voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “It requires balance.
