The sky, once a canvas of bruised purples and angry greys, had softened. It was a pale, hopeful blue now, the kind that promised a gentle afternoon. Eligah Jaycee stood on the porch, the worn wood familiar beneath his bare feet, and breathed it in. It was the scent of home, a fragrance he’d chased through so many restless nights and uncertain days. It smelled of blooming jasmine from the vine that clung to the trellis, of damp earth from the morning’s brief shower, and something else, something deeper and more settled: peace.

He watched his mother move about the small living room, her movements a familiar ballet of quiet industry. She was folding laundry, her hands deft and sure, each garment tucked away with a gentle precision that spoke of years of practice. There was a lightness to her now, a subtle unfurling that hadn’t been there before. The lines etched around her eyes, once carved by worry and exhaustion, seemed softer, less pronounced. It was as if the constant pressure that had borne down on her for so long had finally lifted, allowing her true self to emerge.

“You’re quiet this morning, my love,” she said, her voice a warm melody that always found its way to the deepest corners of his heart. She didn’t look up, but he felt her awareness of him, a constant, unwavering presence.
