The hypnotist's voice faded into a distant hum, like waves retreating from a shore I no longer stood upon. The velvet darkness behind my closed eyes began to shimmer, and I felt myself falling—not downward, but inward, through layers of time that peeled away like the skins of an onion, each one revealing something rawer beneath.
