Chapter 4

The Bloodline Bargain

Anya and Seraphina begin investigating Anya's mother's true identity and the Vael bloodline, starting with a clandestine visit to the hybrid prisoner Corvin, who reveals that Anya's mother was a hybrid who defected to the vampire world and that Kael wants Anya not as an enemy but as a key to unlocking an ancient power that requires dual-blooded magic. Valerius catches them at the cells and is forced to admit he knew Anya's mother personally and helped hide her identity. Anya's dual magic surges dangerously during a combat assessment, manifesting both vampire and hybrid traits simultaneously in front of the entire class, confirming what the instructors feared. Dorian escalates his bullying after witnessing her hybrid-like magic, accusing her of being a traitor. Seraphina reveals her own secret: her family was killed by hybrids, which is why she fights so fiercely, but she stands by Anya anyway. The chapter ends with Kael's forces breaching the Academy's outer perimeter, signaling a direct attack.

There's a particular quality to the morning after you've discovered your entire life is a lie. Anya supposed she should have been familiar with it by now — she'd had practice — but this time the feeling had a different texture. Less shock, more sediment. Like the truth had settled into her bones overnight and calcified into something she'd have to carry whether she wanted to or not.

She woke before dawn. The gold energy behind her sternum was a low, steady hum, and the red — the hybrid red, the wolf red, the blood-that-wasn't-supposed-to-be-there red — was curled around it like a vine around a pillar. Neither was fighting. Both were watching. Waiting. She'd become a landlord for two tenants who hated each other but had apparently signed a ceasefire agreement while she slept.

Wonderful.
