Chapter 6
Sharing the Harvest
Kito now understands. He helps Mzee share the saved food. The villagers' faces light up with gratitude. Kito learns that true strength lies in patience and thoughtful care.
The air in the village square hummed with a new kind of energy, a quiet anticipation that settled over the dusty ground like a gentle rain. Kito stood beside Mzee, his small hands still tingling from the effort of helping carry the woven baskets. The baskets, once hidden and mysterious, now spilled their bounty onto the waiting mats. Golden maize, plump yams, and dried beans – a sight that made Kito’s own stomach rumble, but this time, it was not with the hollow ache of hunger, but with the deep, satisfying warmth of a promise fulfilled.

She held out her own small hands, accepting a portion of maize that seemed as tall as her head. Kito saw a younger child, no older than himself, reach out a grubby hand for a yam, his eyes shining with a joy that mirrored Malenga’s.
“You see, Kito,” Mzee’s voice was soft, barely above the murmur of the grateful villagers, “sometimes the greatest treasures are those we guard most closely. Not to keep for ourselves, but to keep for all of us.”
