Mzee shows Kito his careful plans. He teaches about patience, about saving for the hardest days, and how foresight can save a village from hunger's grip.
The air in the cave was cool and still, a stark contrast to the dry, dusty heat that clung to the village like a second skin. Kito stood beside Mzee, his small chest still heaving from the climb, his eyes wide with a wonder that had begun to chase away the gnawing suspicion he’d carried for so long. Before them, bathed in the soft glow of Mzee’s lantern, lay not just food, but a promise.
Baskets woven from sturdy reeds overflowed with plump, sun-ripened maize. Sacks, tightly bound, bulged with dried beans, their earthy scent mingling with the faint, sweet aroma of preserved fruits. There were even small clay pots, sealed with wax, holding what looked like honey, its golden hue visible through the translucent seal. It was a treasure trove, a feast fit for a king, and Kito couldn’t quite reconcile this abundance with the empty bellies back in the village.
Mzee, his face etched with a weariness Kito now understood, gestured with a gnarled hand. "This, Kito," he said, his voice a low rumble, "is not hoarding. This is hope."
