Chapter 4
The Truth Revealed
Kito bravely confronts Mzee. The elder, with a gentle smile, explains his secret. He wasn't hoarding, but protecting the precious harvest from hungry pests and the harsh sun.
The night air, usually alive with the chirping of crickets and the distant howl of a hyena, felt heavy, thick with an unspoken question. Kito, his small heart thumping against his ribs like a trapped bird, crept through the hushed village. The moonlight cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to twist and writhe, mirroring the turmoil in his own belly. He had seen Mzee, the village elder, slip away just as the last embers of the communal fire began to fade, a dark shape against the indigo sky. And Kito, driven by a hunger that gnawed deeper than the emptiness in his stomach, had followed.
He moved from hut to hut, a silent phantom, his bare feet making no sound on the packed earth. Each step was a gamble, each rustle of leaves a potential betrayal. The path Mzee had taken led away from the familiar, towards the jagged teeth of the hills that loomed like sleeping giants on the horizon. Kito could feel the prickle of fear, a cold dew on his skin, but the image of Malenga’s hollow eyes, perpetually searching for a scrap, pushed him onward. He imagined the food Mzee always seemed to have, the plump mangoes, the smooth, round yams, and his suspicion hardened into a desperate resolve.
The trail grew steeper, the air thinner. Kito’s breath came in ragged gasps, his legs burning, but he kept his eyes fixed on the faint outline of Mzee ahead. The elder moved with a surprising nimbleness, his silhouette a dark smudge against the starlit canvas. As they neared the foothills, Mzee veered off the worn path, disappearing into a dense thicket of thorny bushes. Kito hesitated, his heart leaping into his throat. He could hear the faint snap of twigs under Mzee’s feet, and then, silence.
