The chill that had settled in my bones wasn't entirely from the biting desert wind whipping across the desolate landscape of Juab County. It was a deeper, more pervasive cold, the kind that seeped into your very marrow, whispering of things best left undisturbed. They spoke of cold spots in the abandoned assay office, of disembodied whispers carried on the wind, of the distinct scent of pipe tobacco in rooms long devoid of any living smoker. Standard fare for a haunted locale, I’d thought, cataloging it all with a practiced, albeit slightly less enthusiastic, pen.
