The air in the old Salt Lake City library felt thick with the dust of ages, a tangible weight pressing in on me as I sat across from Eleanor Vance. Her reputation preceded her, a quiet force in the state’s historical circles, known for her meticulous research and an almost uncanny ability to unearth the forgotten corners of Utah’s past. Today, however, her usual warm demeanor seemed tinged with a certain gravity, her eyes, sharp and intelligent behind wire-rimmed glasses, held a flicker of something I couldn't quite decipher. I’d come seeking more than just facts; I was hoping for a key, a Rosetta Stone to the spectral language Utah seemed to be speaking.
"You've been chasing shadows, haven't you, my dear?" Eleanor began, her voice a low murmur that seemed to vibrate with the hushed reverence of the place. She gestured vaguely towards the stacks of books surrounding us. "And you've found some rather persistent ones, I gather."
I nodded, a knot of anticipation tightening in my stomach. "More than I ever expected, Ms. Vance. The stories I’ve collected, the experiences… they’re starting to form a tapestry, but the threads are tangled. I feel like I’m missing a crucial pattern, something that connects them all."
