The air in Logan Canyon always feels different. It’s a palpable shift, a breath of something ancient and wild that settles on your skin the moment you leave the familiar embrace of the valley floor. Today, though, there was a weight to it, a premonition that clung to the pine needles and whispered through the rustling leaves. Chapter 11, I’d titled it in my mind: The Logan Canyon Cave’s Darkness. A place whispered about in hushed tones, a shadow on the map of Cache Valley that drew the curious and the foolhardy alike.
My old pickup truck grumbled its way up the winding road, the familiar scent of damp earth and evergreen filling its worn interior. The sunlight, dappled and shifting, played across the dashboard, a fleeting dance of light and shadow that mirrored the very nature of the place I was headed. Local lore painted the cave with broad strokes of mystery, hinting at things best left undisturbed, at energies that hummed beneath the surface of our everyday lives. Some spoke of strange lights, others of an unnerving silence that swallowed all sound. The most persistent tales, however, revolved around a feeling, a profound sense of being watched, of stepping into a presence that predated human memory.
I’d spoken with Old Man Hemlock, the local historian, just yesterday. He’d sat in his study, a room crammed with the dusty artifacts of Cache Valley’s past, his eyes twinkling with a mixture of amusement and something akin to apprehension. “That cave, lass,” he’d said, his voice raspy like dry leaves, “it’s seen things. Things no one rightly remembers, but the earth remembers. The rock remembers.” He’d tapped a gnarled finger on a faded map spread between us, his finger hovering over a barely discernible marking deep within the canyon’s embrace. “They say it’s a mouth, you see. A mouth that swallows stories and spits out echoes.”
