The dust swirled around Colonel Jack Stone’s boots, a gritty, familiar caress that stirred a phantom ache in his gut. The skeletal remains of the marketplace, scorched timbers and blackened stone, were a tableau of ruin he knew all too well. It had been years, but the scent of smoke, the guttural cries, the raw, unadulterated terror – they clung to this place like a shroud. This was the ghost town, the crucible where his past failures had been forged into the chains that now bound him.

“Colonel?” Anya’s voice, soft but persistent, cut through the mournful silence. She stood a few paces back, her eyes, usually sharp and analytical, clouded with an understanding that went beyond tactical assessment. She saw the tension in his jaw, the rigid set of his shoulders, the way his gaze swept the desolation with an almost unbearable intensity.

Stone blinked, the present snapping back into sharp focus. He forced his gaze away from the specter of the past and onto the scarred earth before them. “Just… remembering, Agent Sharma.” His voice was rough, a gravelly whisper that barely disturbed the air.
