The air in the hastily assembled command center hummed with a desperate energy. Screens flickered, displaying fragmented data streams and grainy satellite imagery. Sweat beaded on Colonel Jack Stone’s brow, not from the desert heat that still clung to their temporary base, but from the gnawing dread that had settled in his gut since Anya’s discovery.
"Talk to me, Anya," Stone’s voice was a low growl, cutting through the nervous chatter. He stood over her shoulder, his gaze fixed on the holographic projection hovering above her workstation. It depicted a complex chemical structure, terrifying in its simplicity.
Anya Sharma, her usually sharp features etched with exhaustion, pointed a trembling finger at a specific part of the molecule. "This, Colonel. It’s a hyper-virulent strain of VX, modified for airborne dispersal and with a significantly accelerated incubation period. They’ve weaponized it, and they’ve made it terrifyingly efficient." Her eidetic memory, usually a source of pride, now felt like a curse, replaying the horrifying implications of the data over and over.
