The desert air, thick with the scent of dust and distant diesel, pressed in on Colonel Jack Stone like a shroud. He stood on the rooftop, the city lights of Kuwait City a glittering, deceptive tapestry below. The intel was stark, brutal, and screaming for action. Anya’s voice, usually a crisp beacon of logic, was tight with suppressed urgency as she briefed him via comms. “The target is a primary distribution hub, Colonel. If Al-Fahad’s chemical agents are moved from there tonight, we’ve lost our window. The entire Eastern Seaboard… gone.”

Stone’s jaw tightened. He saw the faces again – the ones from that market in Ramadi, the innocent lives caught in the crossfire of his past. A cold dread, familiar and unwelcome, coiled in his gut. “And the civilians, Anya? What’s the civilian presence at that hub?”

Anya’s response was immediate, devoid of the usual analytical detachment. “Heavy. Workers finishing their shifts, families living in the adjacent sector… it’s a populated area, Jack. Moving in hard and fast means collateral.”
