The air in the chapel hung thick and heavy, a suffocating cloak woven from the scent of wilting lilies and unspoken grief. Tatiana clutched the worn fabric of her dress, the rough wool a stark contrast to the smooth, cool marble of the casket. Leo. The name echoed in the hollow chambers of her mind, a phantom limb that ached with an unbearable emptiness. She’d come to his wake, of course. How could she not? He’d been her anchor, her confidant, the one constant in the swirling chaos of her new life. And now, he was gone. A chill, unrelated to the chapel’s temperature, snaked down her spine.
She needed air. The stifling atmosphere was pressing in, threatening to crush her. Pushing herself away from the hushed murmurs of condolence, Tatiana moved towards the heavy oak doors, her steps faltering as she navigated the somber crowd. Each face was a mask of sorrow, a tableau of shared loss. She felt like an intruder, a ghost in their midst, her own pain a raw, exposed nerve amidst their polite condolences.
Her hand reached for the cold brass of the doorknob, the metal biting into her skin. Just as her fingers closed around it, a force met hers, a collision that sent a jolt through her arm. She stumbled back, her breath catching in her throat.
