The air in Elara’s small, cluttered dwelling grew heavy, not with smoke or the scent of dried herbs, but with the weight of unspoken truths. The map, spread between us on the rough-hewn table, seemed to pulse with a faint, internal light, its inked lines now more like veins carrying a vital, secret blood. Elara, her eyes, ancient as the mountains themselves, fixed on the parchment, her usual playful glint replaced by a solemnity that settled deep within my bones.

“You see this, child,” she began, her voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. She traced a finger, gnarled and earth-stained, over a particularly intricate swirl of lines that had previously seemed like mere decoration. “This is not a road. Not in the way you imagine, leading to a valley of gold or a city of crystal.”

My heart, which had been soaring with the promise of a tangible destination, faltered. “But… the New Beginning World? It’s a place, isn’t it? A place where… where I can belong?” The words felt fragile, like spun glass, threatening to shatter against the sudden uncertainty.
