The sterile scent of the clinic always clung to Dr. Ruth’s office, a sharp contrast to the soft floral patterns on the wallpaper. Rihanna sat on the edge of the examination table, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth surface of a forgotten paper cup. Sunlight, fractured through the blinds, painted stripes across the linoleum floor, each one a silent marker of time. Dr. Ruth entered, her usual briskness softened by a weary gentleness. She carried a file, its weight seeming to press down on her shoulders.
“Rihanna,” Dr. Ruth began, her voice a low murmur, like pebbles smoothed by the tide. She sat opposite Rihanna, her gaze steady, yet tinged with a sorrow that Rihanna had come to recognize. It was the look of someone holding a fragile truth, something too heavy to bear alone. “We’ve been reviewing your latest tests.”
Rihanna’s heart gave a little flutter, a nervous bird trapped in her chest. She nodded, her throat tight. She knew what was coming, a whisper of it had been there for months, a shadow lurking at the edges of her vision, growing with each passing day. She tried to keep her breathing even, a skill she’d honed over years of practice.
