Ife, prompted by Rihanna’s persistent kindness or a moment of realization, offers a small, perhaps awkward, apology or a gesture of goodwill.
The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful companion, felt muted today, a pale imitation of its usual warmth against the hospital window. Rihanna watched the dappled light play on the linoleum floor, her breath catching in her chest with a familiar, unwelcome tightness. The rhythmic beep of the monitors was a constant, a gentle hum that underscored the fragile beat of her own heart. She’d been sketching in her notebook, the charcoal smudging softly under her fingertips, when the door creaked open.
It was Ife. He stood there for a moment, framed by the doorway, his usual sharp edges softened by an unfamiliar hesitancy. He held something behind his back, his gaze fixed somewhere over her shoulder, as if a sudden direct look might shatter the fragile peace that had settled between them. Rihanna’s heart gave a small, hopeful flutter, a counterpoint to the weary rhythm of her illness.
“Hey,” he said, his voice lower than usual, stripped of its usual bravado. It was a tentative sound, like a bird testing its wings after a long winter.
