Shyra looked over the notes again. She replayed every event in her head that led up to her arrest. Her thoughts were constantly on repeat trying to remember every detail of every event, incident, and meeting. She thought about how she’d been stripped of her freedom, her name dragged through the mud, all for a crime she didn’t commit. The plans for her life had shattered, revealing an evil that ran deeper than she could have ever imagined.

Her mind drifted back to Felix. His easy smile, the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, the late-night talks fueled by cheap coffee and shared dreams. They had finally gotten to a place where they could finally talk to each other again, after getting a divorce. His death, ruled a suicide, had been a brutal blow. She had grieved in a fog, her world tilted on its axis, but even then, a tiny, persistent voice had whispered doubt. Now, those whispers roared.

The bank fraud. The fraudulent check. The ‘mistake’ in the paperwork that led to her arrest. It was all too neat, too perfectly orchestrated. Her friends, the ones she’d shared secrets with, the ones she’d celebrated triumphs with, their faces swam before her eyes, contorted by a greed she’d never seen. They had been so eager to help, so concerned about her financial well-being after Felix's death. Now, she saw the predatory gleam in their eyes, the calculated smiles that hid a viper’s venom.
