The air in the apartment was thick, not with the usual comforting scent of Mark’s brewing coffee, but with something else, something that clung like damp wool to Sarah’s skin. It was the lingering perfume of a question, a question that hadn’t yet been voiced but hung heavy between them, a silent guest at their familiar table. She watched him across the worn oak, his fingers tracing the rim of his mug, a gesture so achingly familiar it tightened a knot in her chest. His eyes, when they finally met hers, were the same deep sea blue, but there was a shadow in their depths, a distant melancholy that hadn't been there before. Or had it? Sarah couldn't be sure. The edges of her memory felt frayed, like an old photograph left too long in the sun.

"You're quiet," she said, her voice a low hum in the stillness.

Mark offered a small, almost imperceptible smile. "Just… thinking." He looked away, his gaze drifting to the rain streaking the windowpane. The rhythmic patter seemed to mimic the unsettled beat of Sarah's own heart.
