Chapter 9
Confrontation and Reckoning
Athena faces the antagonist, confronting him with the evidence she has gathered. The truth of the past is laid bare, leading to a tense and emotional reckoning.
The air in the dimly lit backroom of "The Rusty Mug" hung thick with the cloying scent of stale beer and desperation. Athena, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, watched the man across the scarred wooden table. Elias Thorne. The name itself tasted like ash in her mouth. Now, here he was, the architect of her shattered world, oblivious to the storm gathering behind her deceptively serene facade.
“You wanted to see me, miss?” Thorne’s voice was a gravelly rasp, laced with a feigned politeness that did nothing to mask the coarse undertone. He took a long swig from a glass of amber liquid, his gaze lingering on her, assessing. Athena felt a chill crawl up her spine, a visceral echo of the fear her mother must have known.
