The air in the old neighborhood was thick with a scent Athena had almost forgotten – a peculiar blend of damp earth, overripe fruit, and something vaguely industrial, a smell that clung to the very fabric of her childhood memories. It was a scent that used to signify home, a place of warmth and laughter, but now it carried the bitter tang of loss. She stood on the cracked pavement, the same pavement where she’d once chased stray cats and scraped her knees, her gaze sweeping over the row of modest houses. They looked smaller now, the paint peeling, the gardens overgrown, a testament to time’s relentless march and, perhaps, to the neglect that had settled over this place like a shroud after her parents were gone.

Her uncle, Sebastian, had insisted they visit. “You need to see it, Athena,” he’d said, his voice a low rumble of concern. “To remember. To understand.” He’d driven her here in his sleek, dark car, a stark contrast to the sputtering vehicles she recalled from her youth. He’d parked a few blocks away, preferring to let her walk the final stretch alone, a silent observer of her re-entry into a world that had shaped and then shattered her.

She clutched the worn leather strap of her satchel, her knuckles white. The familiar landmarks were still there, ghosts in plain sight: the corner shop with its perpetually faded awning, the ancient oak tree in the small park where her father used to push her on the swings, the chipped stone wall that bordered the alley where… she pushed the thought away. Not yet.
