The air in the dimly lit study felt thick with unspoken knowledge, like the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of moonlight. I traced the rim of my teacup, the porcelain cool against my fingertips. The Alchemist, a silhouette against the shadowed bookshelves, had been silent for a long moment, her gaze fixed on something beyond the present, beyond me. It was a silence that hummed with anticipation, a prelude to a revelation I both craved and dreaded.
“You’ve learned to cast the net,” she finally said, her voice a low murmur, like stones tumbling in a deep river. “You know how to draw him in, how to whisper the right incantations to stir his blood. You’ve seen the spark ignite, felt the first tendrils of his fascination wrap around you.” She paused, and I leaned forward, my breath catching. “But attraction, my dear Seeker, is a delicate ecosystem. One careless step, one misplaced word, and the vibrant bloom can wither before your eyes.”
I swallowed, a knot tightening in my chest. This was it. The shadow side of the dance, the part I’d been bracing myself for. The Alchemist had hinted at it, veiled warnings woven into the tapestry of her earlier lessons, but now, the true extent of the danger was about to be laid bare.
