The air in the Alchemist’s study always held a peculiar scent – a blend of dried herbs, ancient parchment, and something indefinably *other*, like ozone after a storm. Tonight, the Alchemist’s gaze was particularly sharp, her eyes, the color of twilight, seeming to pierce through the carefully constructed facade I presented.
“You’ve been circling it,” she stated, her voice a low hum that vibrated in the quiet room. She didn’t ask; she declared. “The persistent whisper that gnaws at the edges of your thoughts, even when he looks at you with such… adoration.”
I shifted in my seat, the velvet of the armchair suddenly feeling too plush, too revealing. Adoration. Yes, he did. When his eyes met mine, there was a softening, a vulnerability that I’d worked so hard to cultivate. But beneath it, the Alchemist was right. There was that other thing.
