The air in the Alchemist's study always held a peculiar charge, a scent of dried herbs and something akin to ozone, as if a storm had just passed through, leaving behind a charged stillness. Tonight, the familiar shadows seemed to deepen, coalescing around her as she spoke, her voice a low murmur that nevertheless commanded attention. I leaned forward, the worn velvet of the armchair seeming to absorb my eagerness, my desire to finally understand the fatal flaws that had always seemed to creep in, unbidden, like a thief in the night.

“You have learned to weave the spells, to whisper the incantations that draw him in,” she began, her eyes, dark and fathomless, fixed on some point beyond me. “You’ve mastered the art of intrigue, the delicate dance of keeping him guessing, of ensuring his gaze remains locked on you. But there is a silence that can undo all your efforts, a quiet erosion that is far more devastating than any overt transgression. It is the silence of neglect, the chilling void left when his deepest needs are left unmet, unacknowledged.”

I shifted, a prickle of unease tracing its way down my spine. Neglect. It sounded so… passive. So unintentional. And yet, the Alchemist’s tone suggested a ferocity, a destructive potential I hadn't considered.
