The scent of old paper and forgotten dreams clung to my father’s study like a second skin. It was a room I usually avoided, a place where the air felt thick with unspoken anxieties and the weight of his perpetual worry. But today, necessity had driven me in. Mom had asked me to find a specific tax document, something about old receipts, and I was wading through the organised chaos of his desk, a landscape of scattered invoices, pens that had long since run dry, and stacks of files that seemed to multiply with every passing week.

It was undeniably locked. Not just a simple latch, but a proper, old-fashioned keyhole, the metal tarnished with age.

A jolt, sharp and electric, shot through me. It was a strange sensation, akin to finding a hidden door in a familiar house. It felt like a contradiction, a secret held in plain sight.
