The air in our small house was a constant hum of unspoken anxieties, a low thrum that vibrated beneath the surface of our everyday lives. For years, it had been the soundtrack to my childhood, a melody of struggle and quiet desperation. But lately, a new note had begun to creep in, a discordant chord that pricked at my senses, urging me to listen more closely. It was the note of mystery, of something hidden, something deliberately obscured. And it all seemed to center around my father, Henry Mqwathi.
He was a man etched with the weariness of battles fought and lost, his shoulders perpetually slumped as if carrying an invisible weight. His eyes, once bright with a hopeful spark, now held a permanent shadow, a reflection of the relentless pressure that seemed to bear down on him. Most of the time, he was a man of few words, his interactions with us children limited to terse instructions or weary sighs.
