Each entry, a tiny shard of glass, reflected a different facet of our unraveling, a narrative of manipulation woven by hands we were meant to trust. Aunt Adelaide’s name, once a whisper of polite family obligation, now echoed with the chilling resonance of a predator.
Mama sat by the window, her fingers tracing the condensation on the glass, her gaze fixed on a world that seemed miles away. Papa, usually pacing with a restless energy that mirrored the gnawing anxiety in his chest, was unnervingly still, his shoulders slumped as if carrying the weight of every lie ever told. My siblings, younger and blessedly unburdened by the full weight of understanding, fidgeted with toys, their innocent chatter a stark contrast to the storm brewing within our parents.
“So,” Papa began, his voice rough, like stones grinding together. He cleared his throat, the sound unnaturally loud in the silence. “This… this is what she’s done.” He gestured vaguely towards the diary, its worn cover now a symbol of betrayal.
