The vibrant pulse of the university, usually a symphony of chatter, laughter, and the distant strumming of guitars, had begun to falter. A subtle discord had crept in, a low hum of unease that Elara Armstrong, despite her bright disposition, couldn't quite shake. It was more than just the lingering fatigue of a busy week or the mounting pressure of midterms; it was a feeling that settled deep in her bones, a prickle of awareness that something was amiss.

The once sun-drenched quad now seemed to hold a peculiar dimness, even at midday. Shadows stretched longer than they should, clinging to the edges of buildings like stubborn ink stains. Students, usually a boisterous throng, walked with a little more purpose, their conversations hushed, their eyes darting around with an almost imperceptible caution. Even the air felt heavier, thicker, as if it were holding its breath.

Elara found herself glancing more frequently towards Calix Ethan Alvarez. He, too, seemed to sense the shift. His usual nonchalant stride had a new tension to it, his sharp eyes scanning not just the passing faces but the very atmosphere. He hadn't spoken much about the strange occurrences, his responses as measured and enigmatic as ever, but Elara saw the subtle tightening of his jaw when a gust of wind, unnaturally cold, swept through the campus, rustling leaves that should have been firmly rooted.
