The air crackled with an energy that was both exhilarating and terrifying. Elara stood beside Calix, their hands brushing as they reviewed the hastily drawn map spread across a worn wooden table in a secluded corner of the library. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the ancient stained-glass windows, illuminating the hushed intensity of their huddle. The usual scent of aged paper and leather was now overlaid with a faint, metallic tang, a subtle reminder of the encroaching darkness they were preparing to face.

"So, if the festival organizer was right," Calix murmured, his voice low and steady, tracing a path on the map with a fingertip, "the nexus of its power is deep within the old observatory. It’s where the ley lines converge, where it’s trying to break through."

Elara nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her Thai heritage, once a source of distant pride, now felt like a tangible weight, a connection to a power she was only beginning to understand. The British pragmatism she’d inherited was battling with the burgeoning, fantastical reality that had unfolded around her. “And the guards… they’re not just students, are they? Not anymore.” She remembered the chilling emptiness in their eyes, the vacant stares of the once-familiar faces now twisted into grotesque parodies of themselves.
