The vibrant energy of the school festival, which had seemed so exhilarating just days ago, now felt like a distant memory, a cheerful dream Elara had woken from too abruptly. The lingering scent of fried food and blooming jasmine, once delightful, now seemed to cling to the air like a shroud, a stark contrast to the chill that had settled deep within her bones. She found herself staring out the window of her dormitory room, the sprawling campus below a tapestry of greens and browns that usually brought her a sense of belonging. Today, however, it felt alien, a place where shadows stretched longer than they ought to, and whispers of unease rustled through the leaves.
Beside her, Calix was equally quiet, his gaze fixed on some unseen point in the distance. The usual nonchalance that clung to him like a second skin seemed to have frayed at the edges, replaced by a quiet intensity that was both reassuring and unnerving. They had faced the shimmering, ethereal entity together during the festival’s closing ceremony, a being of pure light that had erupted from the ancient fountain at the heart of the quad. It had spoken in a language that resonated not in their ears, but in their very souls, a symphony of forgotten tongues and celestial harmonies. And then, the darkness had followed, a creeping tendril of cold that had sought to extinguish the light, forcing them to instinctively raise their hands, a surge of… *something*… flowing between them, pushing the void back.
“It’s a lot, isn’t it?” Elara finally broke the silence, her voice barely a whisper.
