The air in the ancient library was thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten stories. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the stained-glass windows, illuminating rows upon rows of tomes that seemed to hum with a silent, potent energy. Elara traced the spine of a leather-bound book, her fingers lingering on the faded gold lettering. It had been days since the chaotic brilliance of the festival, days since the air had crackled with a magic neither she nor Calix could fully comprehend. The shared glance, the sudden surge of power, the brief, terrifying glimpse of a swirling vortex of darkness – it had all been too real to dismiss.

Calix sat opposite her at a heavy oak table, his usual air of nonchalant indifference replaced by a focused intensity that Elara found both captivating and a little unnerving. He’d been as bewildered as she by the events, but unlike her initial, almost panicked search for answers, he’d approached their predicament with a quiet, methodical determination. He’d suggested the library, specifically this seldom-used section dedicated to the university’s founding and esoteric history.

“Anything?” Calix’s voice was a low rumble, barely disturbing the hushed sanctity of the space.
