The air in the university quad hummed with an unusual tension, a stark contrast to the usual vibrant chaos of the annual school festival. Laughter and music still echoed, a festive facade trying desperately to mask the growing unease. Elara felt it prickling at her skin, a cold sensation that had nothing to do with the gentle Philippine breeze. It was the same feeling that had settled over her since the strange incident with Calix during the closing ceremony of the previous day – a feeling of something vast and ancient stirring beneath the surface of their ordinary lives.
She found Calix leaning against the cool stone of the library, his usual aloofness amplified by a palpable weariness. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a flicker of something Elara recognized: apprehension. The ornate dragon kite they had accidentally brought to life, its scales shimmering with an impossible, ethereal light before it dissolved back into stardust, had been more than just a magical mishap. It had been a sign, a herald.
"It's getting stronger, isn't it?" Elara’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the festive din.
