Chapter 9
A Whisper in the Wind
Maeve overhears hushed conversations and observes furtive glances among stable hands. Her ability to read unspoken cues allows her to piece together fragments of information, hinting at a conspiracy.
The air in the stable hung thick and heavy, a scent of dried hay, horse sweat, and something else… something akin to fear. It clung to the rafters, seeped into the rough-hewn wood of the stalls, and settled in the back of my throat like dust. I moved through the aisles, my boots silent on the packed earth, Shadow’s quiet presence a steady anchor beside me. He’d settled remarkably well, considering the chaos he’d been pulled from. A stable hand, young and with eyes too old for his face, scurried past me, his gaze darting nervously towards Silas Blackwood’s private tack room. Silas, a man whose gruff exterior was as meticulously maintained as his prize horses, seemed to be the nexus of this unease. His presence, usually a looming, authoritative force, now felt like a coiled spring, ready to snap.
