The air in the stable was thick with the scent of hay and something else, something metallic and faintly sour, like old fear. It clung to the rafters, seeped into the very straw beneath my boots. Shadow, the horse Silas Blackwood had practically shoved into my care, stood at the far end of his stall, a magnificent, dark silhouette against the fading light. His coat was the color of a moonless night, and his eyes, when he deigned to lift them, held a wildness that resonated deep within my own bones.
He was a creature of shadows, a whisper of a horse. The whispers around him were louder, though. "Untrainable," they’d murmured in the paddock, their voices like dry leaves skittering across concrete. "Too much baggage," others had said, their gazes sliding past me, past the scarred edges of my own past. They saw a red-haired woman with more dreams than sense, a dreamer from the wrong side of the tracks, trying to tame a beast no one else could manage. They didn’t see the quiet hum of understanding that passed between me and the creatures who carried their own invisible wounds.
I approached Shadow slowly, my movements deliberate, unhurried. He flinched at my approach, a tremor running through his powerful frame. It wasn't aggression, not entirely. It was the raw, unadulterated terror of a cornered animal, the instinct to bolt, to disappear. I’d known that feeling intimately. The cold dread that coiled in the gut, the desperate urge to become invisible, to melt into the background. It was a language I spoke fluently.
