The air in the stable hung thick with the scent of hay, sweat, and something else, something taut and metallic like fear. It clung to the rough-hewn timbers, seeped from the very straw underfoot. Silas Blackwood stood by the far end of the barn, arms crossed, a silhouette against the pale Arkansas sun slanting through the high windows. His gaze, as sharp and unyielding as the flint he’d likely used to start his first fire, was fixed on me. I could feel it prickling the back of my neck, a familiar sensation from years spent navigating the treacherous currents of childhood cruelty.

He was a mountain of a man, carved from generations of hard ground and harder decisions. His hands, thick and calloused, looked like they could wring the life out of a stubborn mule or coax a whisper from a frightened foal. Today, they were clenched, betraying the practiced stillness he usually wore like a second skin. Silas Blackwood. The name itself was a low rumble in the racing world, a legend whispered in hushed tones and grudging respect. He’d seen it all, done it all, and from his vantage point, I was just a fleeting anomaly, a red-haired comet blazing across his well-trodden sky.

“Still fussin’ over that one, O’Connell?” His voice was a gravelly rasp, like stones tumbling down a slope. He gestured with a thumb towards Shadow’s stall. The bay gelding, my current project, my mirror, was pacing the confined space, his breath coming in ragged puffs. His eyes, wide and dark, darted nervously at every shift in the light, every creak of the barn. He was a symphony of frayed nerves, a masterpiece of distrust.
