The air in the stable, usually a comforting blend of hay, horse, and honest sweat, had begun to carry a different scent. It was subtle, like a phantom whisper on the wind, a metallic tang of unease that prickled the back of my neck. Silas Blackwood, with his perpetually furrowed brow and the permanent scowl etched around his mouth, was a constant presence, a grizzled sentinel guarding the old ways. He flinched, but not as violently as he used to. Progress. Small victories were the currency of my world, each one a tiny rebellion against the shadows that had tried to consume me.
