The air in the stable hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of horse, hay, and something else, something sharp and metallic like fear. It clung to the rough-hewn timbers, seeped into the very straw underfoot. I’d felt it before, that prickle on my skin, the subtle shift in a horse’s posture that spoke of more than just a loose latch or a startling noise. It was the same unease that had settled over Willow Creek Stables since the string of… incidents.

Silas Blackwood’s shadow loomed large, a constant, brooding presence. He’d been my first suspect, his gruff dismissal of my abilities a shield for something, I was sure. He saw me as an upstart, a naive girl playing with horses far beyond her grasp. The way he’d flinched yesterday, his large eyes rolling white at the mere approach of a particular feed cart, had been a jolt. Not just a scare, but a deep-seated terror, the kind that etched itself into muscle memory. It was the same terror I’d seen in him when he first arrived, a ghost of a horse, all bone and fear.
