The air in the stable always held a certain stillness, a hushed reverence that settled deep in my bones. It was a quiet born not of emptiness, but of countless untold stories, of breath held tight and muscles coiled, of the silent language that passed between hoof and human. Shadow, my wild, untamed enigma, seemed to breathe it in with me. His coat, the colour of a storm-bruised sky, rippled with a nervous energy that had, at first, felt like a wall between us. Now, it was a familiar tremor, a hum beneath my fingertips as I groomed him.

He’d come to me from a place I didn’t like to dwell on, a place where his spirit had been chipped away, where his fear had been honed into a weapon against him. The racing circuit, bless their hearts, had written him off. Too wild, too broken, too much of a risk. They saw only the bucking, the rearing, the wild-eyed panic. I saw the flicker of intelligence, the desperate plea for understanding, the echo of a pain I knew all too well.

Today, though, something was different. He stood largely still beneath my brush, his large, dark eyes, usually darting with apprehension, fixed on some unseen point beyond the stable door. He’d stopped flinching when my hand moved too quickly, the sudden jerk of his head replaced by a subtle shift of weight, a soft snort that was more question than alarm. It was a fragile peace, built on trust painstakingly earned, on hours spent simply existing in his space, offering no demands, only presence.
