Chapter 6
The Dawn of Understanding
This divine encounter shatters the darkness. A nascent understanding of purpose and the possibility of redemption begins to bloom, guiding him from despair onto a path of healing and self-discovery.
The air, thick with the scent of stale weed and desperation, clung to me like a shroud. Above, the stars, indifferent diamonds scattered on black velvet, offered no solace. Below, the world of my grandmother’s rooftop stretched out, a stage for my final act. The rough shingles bit into my bare knees as I knelt, the familiar ache in my chest a dull throb that had become my constant companion. It was a physical manifestation of a soul hollowed out, a space where joy once resided, now a gaping void. The abuse, a constant, gnawing presence, had sculpted my young mind into a battlefield, each harsh word, each stinging blow, a fresh wound deepening the old ones. I learned to be small, to disappear, to build walls so high no one could ever touch me, or more importantly, no one could ever hurt me again. But those walls, meant to protect, had become my prison.
