Amy’s breath hitched, a sharp, painful gasp that stole the air from her lungs. The words, so simple, so mundane, hung in the air between her and her mother, yet they struck Amy with the force of a tidal wave. “Moving out tomorrow?” she echoed, her voice a thin, reedy sound, barely audible even to herself. It couldn't be true. It simply *couldn't*. Her mind, usually a whirlwind of thoughts and daydreams, felt suddenly blank, a vast, empty expanse where the important fact of their impending departure should have been.

Her mother stood in the doorway, her expression a mixture of concern and gentle impatience. Her hands were clasped in front of her, a familiar gesture that usually signaled a need for Amy to focus, to listen. We need to get ready.”

Last day. The words reverberated in Amy’s head, each syllable a hammer blow against the fragile bubble of happiness she had been living in. Last day. And Leo… what about Leo? The image of his bright, understanding eyes, the easy laughter that always seemed to bubble up between them, flashed through her mind. He was her secret, her solace, her other world. How could she leave him? How could she possibly face a new town, a new school, without him?
