Chapter 5
A Mother's News
Amy's mother enters her room, her face a mixture of concern and urgency. She tells Amy she must go to school, revealing with a heavy heart that they are moving tomorrow.
The soft glow of the bedside lamp was a familiar comfort, casting gentle shadows across Amy’s room. Books lay scattered on her rug, a half-finished drawing perched on her desk, and the lingering scent of lavender from her pillow filled the air. It was a cozy haven, a space where her imagination had always taken flight, but lately, it had also been a place of quiet yearning. The silence, once a canvas for her dreams, now felt heavy, echoing the emptiness she carried inside. She’d found solace, a spark of vibrant connection, in Leo, her friend from beyond the looking glass. Their whispered conversations, their shared giggles, the way he looked at her as if she were the only person in the universe – it had all been a balm to her lonely soul. She’d almost forgotten what it felt like to be truly seen, truly understood.
A soft knock at the door pulled her from her reverie. It was her mother, her face etched with a familiar blend of love and a touch of weary practicality. Amy’s heart gave a little lurch. Her mother’s visits usually meant something important, something that required Amy’s attention in the real world, a world that sometimes felt a little less vibrant than the one she shared with Leo.
"Amy, honey?" her mother’s voice was gentle, but there was an undeniable urgency beneath it. She stepped into the room, her eyes scanning the familiar clutter with a fond, yet slightly strained, smile. "I know you've been… occupied lately," she began, choosing her words carefully, "but there's something important we need to talk about."
