The hum of the unfamiliar refrigerator was a low thrum beneath the surface of Amy’s thoughts. It was a sound that echoed the persistent, quiet hum of her own displacement, a feeling that had settled in her chest like fine dust since they’d packed the last box. Sunlight, a pale imitation of the golden light that had once streamed through her old bedroom window, slanted across the unfamiliar carpet, illuminating motes dancing in the air. This was the new house, the new town, the new life that had felt so terrifyingly real just weeks ago. But today, the dust felt less heavy, the hum less disquieting.

Amy traced the condensation ring left by her glass of orange juice on the polished surface of the kitchen table. It was a small, insignificant mark, yet it held a certain permanence, a tangible presence in this landscape of change. She remembered how Leo had once drawn constellations on the condensation of her old window, his finger a delicate brush against the cool glass, his words painting stories of distant nebulae and swirling galaxies. Her heart gave a familiar, happy lurch. Even now, the memory was a warmth that spread through her, chasing away the lingering chill of loneliness.

Her mother bustled in, a whirlwind of practicality and a faint scent of lavender. “Morning, sleepyhead,” she chirped, her voice a little too bright, a little too forced. “Big day today. We need to get you registered at the new school, remember?”
