The old attic room, once a sanctuary of forgotten toys and dusty memories, had become their clandestine meeting place. Sunlight, filtered through the grimy panes of the dormer window, cast shifting patterns on the worn floorboards as Amy traced the outline of a faded floral wallpaper pattern with her fingertip. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper and the faint, sweet perfume of the lavender sachet her grandmother had tucked away years ago. It was here, in this quiet corner of her old life, that Leo found her.

He materialized not with a flash or a bang, but with a soft ripple in the air, like heat rising from a summer road. One moment, Amy was alone, the familiar ache of Leo’s absence a dull throb in her chest; the next, he was there, leaning against a towering stack of hatboxes, his smile as warm and comforting as a hearth fire.

“You’re quiet today,” Leo observed, his voice a low murmur that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the room. He pushed off the hatboxes, taking a step closer, his eyes, the color of a twilight sky, crinkling at the corners.
