Ma leaned against the kitchen doorway, the worn wood cool against her cheek. Sunlight, thick with the dust motes of a thousand mornings, slanted across the linoleum floor, illuminating the quiet ballet of her daughters. Mo, hunched over her desk in the sunroom, her brow furrowed in concentration, or perhaps, Ma suspected, in doubt. And Rudy, a whirlwind of small hands and boundless imagination, constructing a city of wooden blocks that defied gravity and logic in equal measure. The house, as always, hummed with a soft, almost imperceptible energy, a gentle exhalation of memories and unspoken wishes.

Ma had spent so long believing dreams were the ephemeral things of childhood, destined to fade with the onset of responsibility, like the dew on a summer morning. She’d tucked hers away, a small, precious thing, into the quiet corners of her heart, believing it was for the best. Ma had seen the flicker of frustration in Mo’s eyes, the way she’d sometimes grip the edge of her desk as if to anchor herself against an invisible tide. Mo wanted to be *something*, Ma knew. Something significant, something that mattered. But the fear of falling short, of not being enough, was a heavy cloak she wore, invisible to everyone but the house and perhaps, Ma realized with a pang, to herself.
