The rain outside was a soft percussion against the attic window, a familiar lullaby to Rudy’s world-building. Today, her blocks weren't forming castles or fantastical beasts. They were constructing a city, a sprawling metropolis of wood and imagination, laid out on the dusty floorboards. The air in the attic, thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten stories, hummed with an energy that only Rudy seemed to perceive. This was her laboratory, her canvas, her sanctuary.

She traced the outline of a tiny, impossibly balanced skyscraper with her finger, a delicate tower of imagination that defied gravity. Mo’s room, just down the hall, was a storm of self-doubt and ticking anxieties, but up here, in the quiet hum of the house’s memory, Rudy was king. Or queen. Or perhaps the architect of all that was, and all that could be.

“This,” she whispered to a particularly wobbly bridge connecting two apartment blocks, “is where the brave heart lives.”
