The late afternoon sun, a painter of bruised purples and fiery oranges, bled across the sky as Bret strode across the quad, his gaze fixed on the cracked flagstones beneath his worn boots. A lecture on existentialism had left him feeling particularly adrift, the professor’s pronouncements echoing the hollow ache he often carried within. It was then, amidst the rustling leaves and the distant murmur of students, that his eye caught a glint of tarnished gold.

He stooped, his long fingers closing around a delicate locket. It lay nestled in the grass like a forgotten secret, its surface etched with a swirling, almost floral pattern. As he turned it over in his palm, a strange, unsettling familiarity washed over him. It was a ghost of a memory, a whisper from a time he couldn’t quite grasp, a sensation that prickled the hairs on his arms. He flipped it open, but the tiny, faded photographs inside were too indistinct to decipher, mere smudges of sepia and shadow. Yet, the weight of it, the cool metal against his skin, felt significant, a silent question posed to his own guarded heart. He slipped it into his pocket, a curious weight now settling in his chest, heavier than mere metal.

Meanwhile, across campus, in the hushed confines of the library’s special collections, Holly traced a gnarled finger over the brittle parchment. Brittany, her best friend, a creature of quiet observation and unsettling pronouncements, had led her here, her eyes alight with an almost conspiratorial glee. “This,” Brittany had said, her voice a low murmur that seemed to weave itself into the dusty air, “holds the echoes of what you seek.”
