The air in the library, usually thick with the hushed reverence of ancient texts and the scent of aging paper, now crackled with a different kind of energy. It wasn’t the frantic hum of impending deadlines, nor the quiet desperation of forgotten research. No, this was a subtle, almost imperceptible vibration, a tremor beneath the surface of their forced cooperation. Bret and Holly, perched on opposite sides of a sprawling oak table, were engaged in the arduous task of deciphering a series of symbols etched onto a faded parchment, a relic unearthed from the dusty archives.
Bret traced a line with his fingertip, his brow furrowed in concentration. His usual cynicism seemed to recede, replaced by a focused intensity that Holly found herself—reluctantly—admiring. “This looks like a variation of Old Aramaic,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “But twisted. Almost… corrupted.”
Holly leaned closer, her cheek brushing against the cool wood of the table. Her eyes, usually alight with a playful spark, were now serious, dissecting the intricate patterns. “Corrupted how? Like a bad copy, or something deliberately altered?”
