The air in Kaelen’s secluded study crackled with an unspoken tension, a palpable hum that seemed to resonate with the very stones of the ancient manor. Elara sat opposite him, the locket clutched in her hand, its cool metal a familiar weight against her palm. The last vestiges of daylight bled from the sky, painting the stained-glass windows in hues of twilight purple and bruised orange, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with secrets. Kaelen, usually an island of calm, paced the worn Persian rug, his movements agitated, his gaze fixed on some point beyond the room, beyond Elara, as if wrestling with specters only he could see.
"You deserve to know, Elara," he finally said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards. He stopped, turning to face her, his eyes, those impossibly deep pools of midnight, holding hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Everything. About your mother, about your sister, and about me."
Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs. The journey that had begun with a whisper from a locket had led her here, to this precipice of truth, and she felt a tremor of fear, not of what she might learn, but of how it might change her. "I… I think I’m ready," she managed, her voice barely a breath.
