The air in Lilith’s secluded cabin, once a sanctuary of quiet solitude, now thrummed with a palpable tension. It was a shift Elara felt deep in her bones, a prickling on her skin that whispered of unseen eyes and encroaching danger. Lilith, usually so adept at masking her emotions, was a tightly coiled spring, her gaze darting towards the dense forest surrounding them with a vigilance that bordered on paranoia.
“They’re coming closer,” Lilith murmured, her voice low and rough, a stark contrast to Elara’s own melodic tones. She was sharpening a wicked-looking dagger with a whetstone, the rhythmic rasping sound doing little to soothe Elara’s fraying nerves.
Elara clutched the locket, its cool metal a familiar comfort against her palm. The cryptic symbols etched into its surface seemed to pulse with a faint light, as if mirroring the growing unease within her. “How do you know?” she asked, her own voice barely a whisper. She had learned to trust Lilith’s instincts, even if she didn’t always understand the source of their certainty.
