As they prepare for the counter-ritual, the curse fights back. Aris faces a terrifying spectral entity, a manifestation of the curse's power, testing his resolve and Laras's courage.

The air in our small study had grown thick, heavy with the scent of dried herbs and the nervous energy that crackled between Laras and me. The scattered notes on the desk, a chaotic tapestry of ancient scripts and smudged translations, felt less like a roadmap and more like a desperate plea. We were on the precipice, teetering on the edge of a ritual that promised salvation, or perhaps, a swifter descent into oblivion. Laras’s brow was furrowed, her fingers tracing the faded ink of a symbol that looked disturbingly like a twisted root.

“Are you sure about this, Aris?” Her voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the hushed silence. “This Elder… he was so cryptic. And this text… it speaks of sacrifice, of appeasement.”

I met her gaze, trying to project a confidence I didn’t entirely feel. The gnawing ache in my side, a familiar, unwelcome guest, pulsed with a renewed intensity. Every twitch of my muscles sent a jolt of pain, a phantom sensation of wood scraping against bone. “We don’t have another choice, Laras. We’ve tried everything else. This is our only chance.” The lie felt heavy on my tongue. The truth was, the splintering had begun to feel less like an external attack and more like an internal evolution. A horrifying transformation that was slowly, inexorably, consuming me from within.
